Chevrolet Silverado's New 2022 Design: Sleeker, More Powerful and Improved
What is the Silverado?
The Silverado 1500 has been Chevrolet's
bread and butter for decades, but after the 2019 redesign left us a little
underwhelmed, we weren't sure if it could regain its former glory. The 2022
Silverado looks to change all that with a sleeker design, more powerful engine
options and an improved interior.
What's in the Silverado's engine?
Chevrolet has retired the 4.3-liter V6
engine from its Silverado line for 2022, leaving four alternative engines. The
Silverado's turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine now has 420 lb-ft of
torque, up from 348 last year. Additional weight has been removed from the
eight-speed transmission in order to take advantage of the larger 2.7-liter
engine's increased power.
The 3.0-liter four-cylinder diesel (277
horsepower, 460 lb-ft), 5.3-liter V8 and 6.2-liter V8 remain unaltered from the
previous variant. The 10-speed automated gearbox is used by all of these
motors. All Silverado models with a diesel engine can tow more than last year's
models. However, we'll go over those modifications in a moment.
The new 2022
Chevy Silverado ZR2 is another option. The Silverado ZR2, like the
midsize Colorado ZR2, offers further improvements to add greater off-road
capability. The special suspension dampers and specially tuned springs,
according to Chevrolet, Expandable CV axles with dual-rate springs provide more
wheel articulation and control for rock crawling and high-speed desert driving.
The ZR2 has locking front and rear diffs as well, as well as model-specific
skid plates, An updated front bumper with greater clearance, plus a rear bumper
with easy-to-remove end caps. The 6.2-liter V8 is standard equipment on the
ZR2.
For the time being, compared to more
comprehensive makeovers done to the F-150 Raptor and Ram 1500 TRX, these ZR2
modifications appear rather modest. If Chevrolet can price the ZR2 lower than
its competitors, then the value may also play a role.
How is the Chevrolet Silverado's inside?
The interior of this generation of
Silverado has been our biggest letdown. According to the notable changes made
to the inside of the 2022 model, it appears that Chevrolet wasn't too pleased
with the 2022
chevy silverado interior either. A 13.4-inch horizontally oriented
infotainment touchscreen greets passengers on the LT and above, which flows
into the new digital and configurable instrument panel. On the inside, pictures
reveal a considerably more modern and thoughtful atmosphere that rivals what
buyers have come to anticipate from a truck.
In addition, there have been several
modifications to the interior, including a new center console, updated seats
and trim materials. The top-tier High Country and LTZ models have open-pore
wood and stainless steel speaker grilles, as well.
What's the latest on the Silverado's technology?
The GMC Sierra's voice-activated Google
technology for commands is also present, as well as a new 13.4-inch
touchscreen. The driver may send texts, change audio sources, or adjust the
temperature control by pressing the push button on the steering wheel or
saying, "Hey Google." Users of the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
systems still have access to wireless smartphone connections, and Amazon Alexa
is also supported.
Another great news for the 2022 Silverado
is Super Cruise, Chevrolet's hands-free driver-assist system. We've put this
system to the test in a variety of Cadillacs and have been wowed by its
accuracy and simplicity of use. While it can only be used on a specific set of
highways, Super Cruise has been tailored specifically for the Silverado and may
be utilized while towing. Those fancy, overpriced chains are rarely visited by
the average user.
On all Silverados, Chevy Safety Assist is
standard. The latest Tesla Autopilot suite adds automatic emergency braking,
lane-keeping assistance with lane departure warning, the following distance
indicator, and automated high beams to help keep you safe on the road. A
wide-view rear camera and a comprehensive surround-view camera system are among
the other safety features available. The latter makes connecting a trailer
easier and allows drivers to keep an eye on tire pressures, brake lights, and
more.
How do the Silverado's towing and hauling perform?
The 2.7-liter engine's increased torque
does not result in a higher towing capacity, but its 9,600-pound towing
capacity is still remarkable. The towing capacity for the 5.3-liter and
6.2-liter V8 engines has remained unchanged at 11,200 and 13,300 pounds,
respectively.
For the 3.0-liter turbodiesel, Chevrolet
has raised the maximum towing capacity to 5500 pounds, up from 4000 pounds
previously. A shorter final drive ratio and chassis modifications now allow for
a maximum towing package, allowing the diesel to haul a hefty 13,300 pounds.
